Safety Advice for
Chatters online BUT - Please remember that
for every 200 chatters who are safe on line, If you are talking to an adult in a chat room MOST of them will be honest and will be understanding when you say I can not talk to you, you are too old. No one is expecting you to have your mum or dad sitting behind you constantly watching every conversation you have. After all that would be totally uncool, and if your school or college mates ever found out about it - you would never live it down ! I'm not saying DON'T ever have online friends, as that too would be totally uncool, and I have chatted to some great people on the net. What I AM SAYING is be in control, choose your online friends wisely, protect yourself from harm, and most importantly HAVE FUN.
If you are approached for sinister purposes in a chat room REPORT IT ! No one will think any worse of you for protecting yourself. To Report an incident : *Tell an online moderator, (if any are available) or e-mail the company who's room you are chatting in. Remember to tell them the time that it happened. The nickname of the person who approached you And most of all take a screen shot ( if you can ) of what happened & tell someone.*
NEVER give out personal information This includes Mobile Numbers, Home Details, Surname, The School, College or Uni you attend.
NEVER give out passwords Ex chat room friends can soon become your worst enemy on line.
NEVER give out your E-mail address If you do want to give someone an E-mail address register for one at hotmail or similar company, BUT keep your main ISP e-mail secret.
NEVER
go alone to meet a new chat friend Take a mobile if you have
one.
Try to keep all chat in the main room and avoid private messages if you can. ALWAYS use a moderated chatroom
The sad fact is that people in chat rooms can LIE and DO LIE - Trust no one
